What is a puck screen and how does it help my espresso?

A puck screen is a small metal disc you place on top of your packed coffee grounds before brewing. It evenly distributes the water flow over the coffee puck, which helps prevent channeling (uneven extraction). Using a puck screen can result in more consistent espresso shots and a cleaner portafilter, since it also keeps grounds from sticking to the group head shower screen.

How do I choose the right puck screen size or thickness?

Choose a puck screen diameter that matches your portafilter size (51mm, 54mm, 58mm, etc.). Brewedco offers different thickness options too: ultra-thin screens (around 0.8mm) maximize basket capacity, while standard ~1.7mm screens are very durable. If your machine has limited headspace, an ultra-thin puck screen might be best. Always select the size that fits your portafilter for proper use.

Should I use paper filters with my espresso puck?

Espresso paper filters (like our Brewedco filter paper packs) are optional but can be beneficial. You place a paper filter at the bottom or top of the coffee puck. It helps absorb excess oils and catch fine particles, leading to a cleaner-tasting shot and easier cleanup. They are single-use and biodegradable.
